US President Donald Trump on Thursday (11 June 2026) claimed that a deal to end the war with Iran was nearly complete and that the same would be signed by Vice-President J D Vance over the weekend in Europe. Trump stated the same while speaking to reporters at the Oval Office during an event where he announced the restoration of commercial fishing in protected areas of the Pacific Ocean.
Trump's remarks came hours after he called off military strikes on Iran, threatening to take control of its oil industry. Trump also claimed that Iran has agreed to permanently abandon any effort to obtain a nuclear weapon, as part of the agreement.
"They will not purchase, develop in any way, shape or form a nuclear weapon. They will not have a nuclear weapon," Trump said.
However, Iran has not offered a public confirmation of the full extent of Trump's remarks. Iranian news agencies have reported that the MoU includes reopening of the Strait of Hormuz, the cancellation of US oil sanctions and the release of Iran's frozen funds. IRNA has also reported that no agreement is made regarding the nuclear file in the current memorandum and that nuclear talks will take place within a 60 day period after the signing of the deal.
While addressing a tele-rally supporting Georgia Lt Governor Burt Jones, who is running for the post of Governor, Trump declared that the US has ended the war with Iran.
"I don't know if you heard, but we ended the war with Iran today, and they have agreed never to have a nuclear weapon, something that we insisted on. That was the whole purpose," Trump said.
Trump, however, described the Memorandum of Understanding between the two nations as strong and detailed, 'something that is going to get done'.
Trump also remarked that the the stock market "likes the deal" and that the Strait of Hormuz would be reopened once the deal is finalised. The US President added on that he has spoken to leaders of Middle Eastern countries, including Qatar, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Kuwait and Pakistan, regarding the latest round of deliberations.
The war, which began with US and Israel strikes on Iran on February 28, has caused widespread repercussions, especially with the blockade of the Strait of Hormuz, through which around twenty percent of global oil trade passes.
